If you’re a cabinet maker, geometry is essential to all of the lengths and angles that you calculate. The cabinet shown here goes further and presents the solution to a rather difficult dissection problem. This is the simplest perfect squared square. The entire area is a square and it is divided into squares of distinct integer sizes.

**A geometric construction of the parabola**

A geometric construction of the parabola. The blue point is called thefocus, and the horizontal line is thedirectrix. The blue lines show all the points which are at anequal distancefrom thered point and the blue focus point. The point of the blue line directly above the red dot contributes to the parabolic curve, because theparabola is defined as the set of all points equidistant to the focus and the directrix.
